Ox goads

2021

"Ox goads"   Inspired by the ox goad, a long stick with a pointed end used to spur or guide livestock, usually oxen, pulling a plow or cart. It is probably the origin of the letter "L", because of its shape, in early Semitic writings from around 1500 BC, later adopted by the Greeks in their alphabet.   Acrylic on,120cm x 120cm x 4cm.

Wallflower

2021

Wallflower is the name of a plant with delicate orange or yellow blossoms that often grows along old walls or cliffs. A wallflower is also a quiet, antisocial person who acts shy at parties. Girls who get called wallflowers are often pretty and mysterious. The term was originally used to refer to girls that would not be asked for a dance. More recently the term has been expanded to include men and to include other social gatherings than dances. If you are a wallflower, most likely you; generally only wear dark or neutral colours wander off in your mind even when people are talking to you enjoy your alone time (more than being with your friends) move around, swinging your head, after your friends dragged you to the dance floor can be socially awkward at times, confusing or frustrating people around you don’t see the need to fill silent gaps with small talk … are an awesome abstract art painter ðŸ˜‰ Acrylic on canvas, 120cm x 120cm x 3cm.

Dynamic viscosity

2021

Alla prima is a painting technique in which new paint is added to previous layers of still wet paint. With this technique, the artwork has to be completed in a short time, while the paint is still wet. If you want the colours to flow smoothly into one another in a painting, using the alla prima painting technique, it is important that the different paint colours have the same viscosity. Especially if you want to use the same colour tones across different canvases, as with this artwork. While painting I was mentally occupied with the colour transitions, the viscosity and how I dealt with this dynamically in this painting. I decided to use these thoughts for the name of the painting. Acrylic on canvas, 225cm x 100cm x 2cm.

Take the journey

2021

When I made these series of painting, I was thinking a lot of someone I know well. Someone  who has had a troubled time, for quite some time. She was, again, confronted with some really difficult situations in her life. She had to make some tough decisions, and currently still is working on these decisions to take.   Over the four months that I have been working on this painting, we had several talks on her situation and how to possibly deal with it. It made me realise, again, how difficult life can be. The struggles of life, how to walk through it, how to take the journey. Because you will have to decide, and you do have to take your journey.   “Take the journey No matter where it starts or where it ends Take the journey Someday you’ll make it back home again   You can try to control the weather But the rain inside you is still gonna fall Days of drought will nearly starve you There’s no use hiding we gotta face it all” … as song by many artists.   The journey of my painting ended late August 2021. Your journey is still continuing. Make it a good one !!   Acrylic on canvas, 5 canvasses of 60cm x 80cm x 2cm

Metallurgic creations - 3

2021

Metallic Acrylics on wood panel with bronze anodised aluminum frame In a previous life I had a machine factory. I was proud of the impressive food processing machines we made. Proud of the people in the factory who build those a machines up from literally nothing. Proud and a little jealous of their work and their craftsmanship. At the end of my working day, my desk would look unchanged. At the end of their working day, you could see the shiny big machines they were building getting closer and closer to completion. When I told them they smiled, probably must have thought it funny that the director envied them.  At that time I hardly had time to paint. Now, as a full-time professional artist, I have dedicated my  time to painting and I can and want to create, literally from scratch. Like the men and women in my factory. As a tribute to these craftsmen and women of my past, I am going to make a series of paintings inspired by their craftsmanship and the materials they processed. At the moment of writing (2021) I am still working on this series. This is the third painting is this series.

Cooking is like painting

2021

This is the first painting of the good food cooking series is called: Cooking is like painting. From  a quote of Wolfgang Puck, who said: Cooking is like painting or writing a song. Just as there are only so many notes or colours, there are only so many flavours. It’s how you combine them that sets you apart.   The background of  my inspiration for this series of paintings: In April 2021 we visited friends that had recently moved to our neighbourhood. They prepared us a wonderful meal in Indonesian style. Many different dishes, as is custom with Indonesian food, with delicious smell and vegetables with vibrant colours.   We were seated at a table in their brand new kitchen. The cabinets of the kitchen were in stylish anthracite grey. They were still finishing off their kitchen with silver and gold accessories, which match perfectly with the dark anthracite grey. When we got back home (just in time for the Covid evening curfew) I was very inspired by the vibrant colours of the food against the anthracite grey background, and how well these colours combined. The next morning, before breakfast, I started working on a series of 7 paintings inspired by the delicious food and their colours in the anthracite grey kitchen. I worked with various motives in fore- and background to give each painting its own unique character. I like to read inspirational quotes to get me in the right mindset for painting. For the naming of the paintings in this series I have used parts of quotes about cooking.
